Review:

Director Raihan Rafi’s (Surongo, Poramon 2) Toofan is Shakib Khan’s 250th film as well, and can be described as a gory, racy, action-packed thriller about the titular character, Toofan – a man who rises to power after killing a powerful goon at the age of 15. Seeing his potential, he is taken in by a well-known Don, Bashir (Misha Sawdagor), under whose tutelage he grows increasingly cruel, and more reckless in his pursuit of power. At one point, seeing his threatening growth and killing spree, the government that he helps come to power decides to eliminate him. Toofan uses his doppelganger – struggling actor Shanto – to escape his fate.

The plot and design would remind the audience of several films, right from Om Shanti Om to Don and Don 2, to Animal and KGF (obvious from the look Toofan portrays). The two main songs, Dushtu Kokil (Kona and Akassh) and Ura Dhura (Pritom Hasan and Debosrie Antara) will also remind one of songs such as Dil ka telephone, Bandhobi Lolita and Dard Karara, while a lot of the dialogues make references to the ’90s Bangladeshi pop culture and popular actors like Salman Shah. Beyond this, the plot barely touches on anyone else’s life or background. That said, with stereotypical characters, false wigs and hilarious quips, even with a slow start, the film rapidly spins a web of hate and gore that escalates quickly in the second half. Sharp editing (Jobayar Abir Peal) and excellent cinematography (Tahsin Rahman) in the second half work well to build up the thrill of the chase, which rushes to a roaring climax.

In the acting department, Shakib Khan plays up to his innocent looks as Shanto, while he is commanding as Toofan. As his girlfriend, Suchona, Mimi Chakraborty has a few scenes, but she has a far more convincing and strongly written character than the hapless Julie, played by Masuma Rahman Nabila. Loknath Dey and Gazi Rakayet provide good support to Sultan’s terror-filled life as he goes through one gory rampage after another, establishing himself as a merciless, demonic killer, while in a short but extremely powerful role, Chanchal Chowdhury is chilling as ACP Akram.

Despite the garbled storyline and the lack of character development, Shakib Khan manages to charm his way through the film, which is absurd at many levels, but is fun to watch till the end.

Review: In the 2007 film, Azhagiya Tamil Magan, a young Vijay is pitted against his look-alike. Seventeen years later, we get to see the same thing, but only now it is Thalapathy vs Ilaya Thalapathy. GOAT throws open a new version of Vijay for fans to celebrate. With GOAT, Vijay is not only a Venkat Prabhu hero, but also the Venkat Prabhu villain.

MS Gandhi (Vijay), a highly-skilled agent of the Special Anti-Terrorist Squad (SATS), is your typical ‘Family Man’, who hides his occupation from his wife (Sneha). He takes grocery list while making a move against villains. The couple, parents to a boy (Jeevan), are expecting their second child. Gandhi’s SATS team constitutes of Sunil Thiagarajan (Prashanth), Kalyan Sundaram (Prabhudeva), Ajay (Ajmal Ameer) and their boss Nazeer (Jayaram). On a work-cation trip to Thailand, an unpleasant incident changes his life and his approach to work. Cut to 17 years, Gandhi is now an immigration officer, who spends his days stamping passports, and taking care of his daughter who lives with his wife. The couple are separated. On a work trip to Russia, Gandhi accidentally meets his long-long son Jeevan, a young Vijay. And thus begins a cat-and-mouse game.

With action and emotional sequences, the first half of the film sets a stage for an interesting interval block, which supposedly packs a punch, but predictably factor boils down the catharsis. The second half has plenty of twists, but the climax scene - a fan-pleaser set during the CSK live match - is a bit of a drag. The story line follows a very familiar template, and the narrative, unfortunately, is very easy to foresee. The film’s overall length is a concern too. The action sequences too are just about average. The face-off scenes between young and old Vijay is engaging. With a conventional story, director Venkat Prabhu capitalises heavily on Vijay’s trademark charm. With de-aging technology, he gets to do it twice as well! Vijay is GOAT, no doubt, and he pulls off both the roles with ease. Playing a younger boy in the de-aging version, and adapting to the mannerisms gets full marks. His villainous side is very compelling. Vijays are the biggest asset of GOAT. With Vijaykanth as a front, Vijay also sends a ‘political message’ for his fans. Kokila Mohan as Rajiv Menon, a former SATS officer gone rogue, has done a great job as a bad boy, but between the two Vijays - Thalapathy and Ilaya Thalapathy - his character gets lost. Prashant, Prabhudeva, Sneha, Jayram, Meenakshi Chowdary add to Vijay’s charm. Yogi Babu and Premji bring the comic relief, with former scoring big in the Gandhi-Nehru bit. De-aging technology has been crafted extremely well, contrary to the comments that we saw after the release of the trailer.

ReviewStory: Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson) is hell bent on decoding signals that will not only lead him to his grandfather, but also a mysterious island. And helping in his mission (read journey) is his new stepfather, Hank (Dwayne Johnson) who later realises there is a much bigger challenge (and threat) awaiting them....

Movie Review: Deadly dives into the oceans, a freaky thunderstorm high up in the sky, a flight on a funky helicopter gone wrong, gold showers from the sky, big butterflies, rides on giant honey bees, elephants the size of pets, giant lizards laying eggs that look like rocks.... In short, a dazzling, visual treat. Now that's one reason why Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is nothing less than a joyride, just in case you could not get enough from its 2008 prequel Journey to the Centre of the Earth. As for the storyline there ain't much in store. But then was the journey even meant to look beyond its visual appeal, especially when it's 3D in question!

Maharaja Movie Review:

In this Nithilan Swaminathan directorial, a man named Maharaja (Vijay Sethupathi) files a police complaint because the 'Lakshmi' in his house goes missing. When he goes to the police station to file a complaint, there's a thief in custody who is named Police. Maharaja, the film, is full of such droll contradictions.

To put it matter-of-factly, this is a film that revolves around the lives of two fathers. One is played by Vijay Sethupathi, and the other by Anurag Kashyap. The former lost his wife (Divya Bharathi) while his daughter Jothi was still a toddler. Meanwhile, the latter lives happily with his wife (Abhirami) and a daughter.

Maharaja could have been a very straightforward or ‘we know what's in store’ film for the audience if it was plain sailing. But the manner in which the story has been told has unquestionably made all the difference. Throughout its runtime, there are multiple faulty and disoriented moments. But to give credit where it is due, the film manages to be engaging throughout. Maharaja is one of those films that keeps you invested. You feel so not because everything that plays out on screen is pronounced, but because the makers have been successful in generating anticipation as to what happens next.

With that said, there are many instances in the film that feel rather engineered or contrived. This sentiment is particularly true for one comic moment in the film where Maharaja narrates how Lakshmi went missing. The fact that who/what Lakshmi is is supposed to make us laugh, and it is indeed laughable that this man has approached the police just because of who/what went missing. But the makers overstretch the reactions of those hearing his story. Yes, the situation is funny, but why make it so in your face that makes us feel as if too much is being done.

Right from the first look of the film, the makers have made it clear that this is going to be a violent film. With its lead named Maharaja, you would expect that you were in for a mass outing right from the start. But, rather excitingly, the film starts with a fun game of Antakshari, and initially, Vijay Sethupathi is not presented as an out-and-out hero or as someone to fear. First, we see him working in a saloon and asking for leave from his employer. The very next time we see him, he is in a shop, selecting toys from a fancy store.

A point of contention as far as this film is concerned is the way it has chosen to portray violence, specifically violence against women. In many of our films, violence is used more as a varnishing tool, even if the story doesn't require it. A contentious aspect of Maharaja is the way it has used violence against women as a tool to show how terrible the bad guys are. For instance, there are many ways to show characters in a film in a negative light. One obvious trait for us to hate a character is if that person is physically abusive towards women. In this film, that angle comes across as if it is used only as a tool to showcase how bad the antagonists are. On the other hand, they could have treated the issue with more sensitivity.

What Maharaja also gets wrong is the characterisation of its antagonists, including Anurag Kashyap. Just having a big name as an actor in your film doesn't guarantee that the audience will connect with the character they are playing. The role has to be fleshed out, and that's what's missing from this film. We are told and shown that the antagonists are ruthless and terrible human beings. But the film does a bad job of fleshing out their characters. But the casting of Anurag Kashyap for this role makes sense, as the makers would have wanted to have an actor who has the presence to hold their own against Vijay Sethupathi as the antagonist. But neither the character nor the acting register after a point. As long as the focus is on Maharaja and the police officers investigating his complaint, the film manages to be smooth sailing. Sadly, things start to fluctuate as the focus shifts to the antagonists.

Vijay Sethupathi is wonderful in his 50th film, and he has a well-written role at his disposal. The makers have definitely put in extra effort in conceptualising his character, as almost all the actions that he does and almost all the dialogues that he says have a payoff. And, the actor delivers. But this care for detail isn't given to the characters played by the other popular actors. Abhirami, Mamta Mohandas, Bharathirajaa and Divyabharathi seem to just be there because the makers wanted to rope in known names and not because their presence made any difference to the character or the plot.
